How to discern the “Spirit of Religion”
making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.” Mark 7:13

Spirit of Religion
Have you ever seen an evil spirit? I can honestly say I have not seen anything with my natural eyes, but I believe the spirit of religion raised its ugly head around me twice last week.
You probably have never thought about what a spirit looks like, again I am not going around looking for angels or demons but in a two conversations this spirit came out of nowhere. Here is how you can know it is not from God, this spirit gets offended when you step out in faith and start believing the word of God.
Paul’s words are so much better than anything I could write on dealing with this spirit, so here is what he is saying to you, as you begin to walk in the power of God’s word.
12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. 16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind. Philippians 3:12-16
There is a freedom in forgetting those things which are behind; failures, disappointments, loss, pain, suffering etc. While you forget the bad, you will gain a peace that surpasses all understanding…You simply move on with what God has for you today.
Start each day in the word of God, finish each day in the word and the spirit of religion will not stick to you. How can you know when you are dealing with the spirit of religion? This spirit (as is true with most evil spirits) always brings up the past. “You standing on that promise brother?” “Well, sister so and so died from that, are you saying you are better than her?”
WHAT? Where did that come from? I said, “I am going to believe God for healing”. I am meditating on God’s word, reading when and how Jesus healed all manner of sickness and disease. I also believe the promise of John 14:12 , I can do everything Jesus did. Which by the way is, heal all manner of sickness and disease. (One of many promises)
The spirit of religion does not want anyone to actually meditate on the word of God, this spirit wants us to stay busy arguing, defending our position, holding on to “How we always have done it”. The traditions and doctrines of men, is in a word…Religion. As I study Jesus’ words in Mark 7 this is exactly what He was dealing with too.
I am choosing the word of God over the words of others, I am not called to argue or defend my position, Jesus has called me and you to heal. God wants a complete healing, both physical and spiritual healing.
Salvation brings a spiritual healing that was accomplished at the Cross.
Before Jesus died, He took a beating, so when you look to those stripes in faith, physical bodies are healed. I don’t have it all figured out, but using the name of Jesus, I have seen people healed. Try it, if you are a disciple of Christ, you have been given the power to heal. Trust me, it is in the Bible, all you have to do is believe.
Until next time, remember: You overcome Satan by the blood of the Lamb and the word of your testimony, and by becoming a living sacrifice. Revelation 12:11

For you, “true religion spirit is holy.” It seems that you add holiness and truthfulness to religions. Christ
Not exactly sure how to respond to that, so I’ll let it “speak’ for itself. Thanks for stopping by.
If I understand your post correctly, religion is one thing and true faith in Christ is another. I too am tired of all the religious traditions. What we need is fervent communion with Christ, through the Holy Spirit.
I love my local church, but we need less formality and more passion for the Lord and the lost.
Glen Averill´s last blog ..4 Ways to Find Wisdom
Amen Glen,
You may understand my post better than I do. I see religion as man’s attempt to live as he believes God intended him to live. The word of God is clear but far too many people don’t let the word of God interfere with what they believe.
“Religion” can also be defined (in my world) as adding something to the word of God. (That’s not there) Ex. When Eve told the serpent in Genesis 3:3 …God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ Religion like that will get you killed.
Technically, there is no such thing as the spirit of Religion, or another favorite of Christians, the “gift of discernment”, either. At least they are not in the Bible, which would seem to be kind of important when “expounding” on God’s Holy Word. He doesn’t like when people add or take away, or wrongly divide, and teach His Word. I agree totally with the “spirit” of hat you are saying, especially about “accessing the present Realities” which are “now” found, and available in Jesus Christ. Through His death, resurrection, and ascension to the Fathers right hand.I view religion as one manifestation of what the Bible calls, the “spirit of Whoredoms, working with a “lying spirit, and probably a few other Biblically recorded spirits. A whore or prostitute is a “substitute”, for the real thing, among other things.Just like religon is a substitute, and imposter, and counterfeit of the Realities of Jesus Christ to humanity. Also the Bible speaks of the “gift of Discerning of spirits” ,which allows a believer to “see” into the spirit realm, through the indwelling Holy Spirit. You may see God in any of His 3 Persons, all spirits. Or Satan, fallen angels, demons. Or God’s angels, mentioned in many places in the Old, and New Testament. And also human spirits, born again ones, or unredeemed ones as well.We can receive God’s Wisdom, and Knowledge, both in the Word of each, as part of the 9 Gifts of the Spirit. And also as Isaiah 11 states, the “spirit of wisdom and revelation, i.e. knowledge, which is hidden in Jesus Christ, and God the Father. This revelation of Him, in truth, allows us to “discern’ between the Holy, and Profane, the clean, and the unclean, Truth, and error,as we apply His Word and Spirit, to any, and every situation in life.We know at present, the enemy is forming a “One world Religion”, based in occult, New Age, Hindu/Buddhist/Freemasonic, infiltration of Judeo Christian, Abrahamic inspired religions, Muslim, Jew, Christian.God’s acceptable religion is, ‘Take care of widows, and orphans, in their distress. And don’t become polluted, and defiled by the world system you presently, are ‘occupying”, physically, and spiritually, through the Name, and Purpose of Jesus Christ!
Battlebow, great point, there is no “spirit of religion” found in the Bible. I really like the fictional book “This Present Darkness” and I think some of Peretti”s spiritual realm has affected me. Thank you for your comments.
I like what battle bow said… on the contrary I believe the Bible is merely the outer garments of the the one true law: To love. I think really anything else is also adding to it, when other passages are teachings expounding on applicable. This was the only Commandment given by Jesus.
Jeremiah 31 teaches that in the end times, at the time of this covenant and the messianic world to come that it will not be needed to teach. That G-d’s word will be in the hearts of everyone as the waters cover the earth.
What is interesting… is that these are the days. Jesus said, (paraphrasing) “Not all who call me L-rd will enter the kingdom, and I will say get away from me you workers of lawlessness! But rather they that keep my commandments.” “This is what I command to you today, that you love one another as I love you.” Jesus was the living word, not our Bible. Our bible is the revelation of this word to us, and teachings expounding so much wisdom on this.
The spirit of religion will have many of us fail to recognize something very important. Something that we’ve all been missing… As satan is the accuser of the bretheren, he uses this spirit to MINIMIZE the atoning work of the cross, making it smaller than it really is and to hide G-d’s true power from Christians:
Remember when reading this… Jesus said “Not all those who call me lord will enter the kingdom. But those who keep my commandment of LOVING one another” (All the law and the prophets hang on these two……) [paraphrasing again]
Religion will take Gd who is ONE with a BIG CAPITAL G and make him into 15 different little “gods” with a little “g”. (Idolitary). It will make us forget that Messiah and his word, is a revelation of G-d through the holy spirit through a fully human and fully divine man. Fully divine how? Because he was full of God! This is what we as Christians are to be. Jesus came to put an end to all religion, not start one.
Check out satan’s laws from the satanic bible:
Quite the opposite? He uses religion so that we can accuse people of not being saved. Moshiach, died for the sins of us all. Satan says only Christians are God’s people. He tells Jews only they are and Christians aren’t. He used the Jewish Rabbinical “fathers” to spread lies and hide Moshaich from the holy Jews of today, and used our roman “church” fathers to turn Christian faith into nothing more than a bible cult with a polarized world view. 1/3 of the world population, set up in judgement against against the rest of God’s people! Is this not the beast who swept 1/3 of the stars from the sky!?
Spirit of religion is judgement is Satan. When we judge, we are allowing Satan to sit in the throne of our hearts. When we do not judge and show mercy and grace, the one true God is in our hearts. When sin corrupts us our “temple” completely… G-d leaves because he can’t stay where sin is… and the body dies.
Here’s a hint….
If you are humble and meek and hear this truth, you will come to the kingdom “right now” up out of the lower kingdom to meet Messiah in the upper world and be strengthened by your G-d and join the army of the Jesus, Lord of Hosts and be on the right side of this spiritual battle that is to end shortly. This earth is to be made new, and we are to bring God to it to live here with us. This is the rapture. Come up here. (Not what you expected eh?)
If any are of the spirit of religion, they will hate these words, revealing their spirit as Satan as his time is veryyyyy short. That spirit will tell you that there is no way that God could possibly love us as much as I say he does. That G-d requires Judgement of all others who didn’t accept some creed.
Hint: Romans 10:…. the word confess in hebrew is Yadah. Strong’s concordance shows this as used nearly 60 or so times to mean “Give thanks, and praise God”… and only once as confess. This scripture has nothing to do with creed. You must follow the words of Messiah. “Love”.
What force do you follow? The accuser and judger who lives in the world and wants to take your life? Or the spirit of truth and mercy and love that lives within your heart and gives you life?
Seriously guys, this is important… don’t be afraid, don’t listen to the voice of judgement. Listen to the spirit of truth, of love, of sound reason. OUR GOD, the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob as made manifest to all of mankind by His holy spirit through our messiah Jesus and many others…
I understand this is a huge leap for many of our fellow Christians. Christianity was not meant to be a religion! Religion, man made rules and judgement was taken away by the cross! Judgement, sin, death! We are clean! We are clean! In HIS mercy and HIS righteousness! Not by the way the Satan would have us do works to make ourself righteous!
Take your time if you will, search the ENTIRETY of the scriptures in honest humble truth, you will find these words to be true. If you find this to be truth, I beg you to fight the good fight of G-d, and make this teaching of grace and salvation first priority. What our God did for us all through Jesus is so much larger than we could ever imagine!
His banner over us is Love!
Thank you for sharing, This was a well thought out comment that added to this post. Thank you for taking the time tp respond.
Thank you.
The law is a double edged sword. If it is within us we are under mercy and judgement is not within us. If it is not within us, then we are under judgement, and mercy is without.
What is inside of us comes out of our mouths. Mercy or Judgement, Fear or Love. As G-d lives inside of us as revealed by Jesus and the holy spirit, not one word will return back null or void.
In the world to come (heaven on earth) the bible teaches us that there will be no night only day. It also teaches that G-d does not sleep or slumber. Today we sleep 1/3 of the day. Today 33% of the world is Christian yet lives in Judgement. 1/3 of the stars were swept from the sky and hurled to the earth. We judge others, therefore we are judged. We need to be as little children who are under Grace, and not proud that we have exalted our own new branch, over the other branches in the tree of life.
This is what it means to live in darkness… to live in the world below with the beasts of the earth and the birds of the air, and not above with the kingdom of heaven. I really thank you for hearing this, taking it to heart: My plea for the church to come up and meet Messiah and their G-d in the spiritual realm of heaven so that we can bring the kingdom come to earth.
I understand that it will take many under bondage to humble themselves. If G-d lives within us, and our human bodies are the temple, yet we make ourselves proud and rise against the rest of humanity, are we not rebelling against G-d who lives within us?
If we understand this, then we shall put on the incorruptible and put away with the corruptible. Once the world understands this completely we shall not taste physical death any longer and will have found ourselves back to Eden dwelling in harmony with God.
I’ll leave this on a high note with a song: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbqn0k_one-day-matisyahu-akon_music
You are not far from the kingdom!
actually it doesn’t matter what Religion you may have, as long as you treat the other person right.`;.
I would agree with part of your comment but disagree with your overall statement. I think how you treat people has more to do with your character and integrity than religion. As for it “doesn’t matter what Religion” I am confident that it matters immensely where you place your faith.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6) Jesus clearly says there is no other way to God. Putting my faith in what Jesus did on the cross has changed my life and made me who I am today.
So I agree that if your religion teaches you to treat people like you want to be treated, and you practice that, it will help you here on Earth. What I do not accept is the teaching that says,”there are multiple “ways” to Heaven.”
I have to agree with Mohammed, because this is exactly what is exemplified in the writings of Paul, especially in the book of Romans.
As Jesus/Yeshua said “I am the way the truth and the life…” I do not believe this isn’t a statement of “Religious” creed. “Not all who call me Lord shall enter into the Kingdom, but rather those that keep my commandments.” That commandment is to love one another.
Roman’s 13:8-10
Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. 9The commandments, “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” “Do not covet,”[a] and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 10Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
I believe that faith has absolutely nothing to do with religion. If anything, a large part of Jesus’ ministry was to do away with man-made religious boundaries, and show us spiritual truth; truth by which there is no boundary. Following what Jesus said allows us to enter through that door. It is by being a follower, not a fan. The term way, means a path, or method. It is important for us to recognize the “holy spirit” of Jesus, that is the “inner man”, and not to confuse this with the person of Jesus, that is the outer flesh or garment of the truth. To do so is to confuse the outer garment of Torah (The letter of the law), with the inner garment of the holy spirit (The very substance of G-d and the fulfillment of the Torah.
Jesus taught us that good trees can only produce good fruit and that bad trees can only produce bad fruit. To say compassion, mercy, tolerance, love and patience are not good fruit when found in one who is not “Christian” by creed is to completely twist the words of Jesus. I really propose that we rethink our previous understanding of what “I am the way the truth and the life”…
This is because, there is a clear difference between “knowing” the way, and “walking” the way.
In the physical sense, we do tend to get wrapped up on the physical person of Jesus, and not on the inward spirit person of Jesus. The bible is clear that it is this inner “man” of Jesus that we are following which was sent by God.
This holy spirit exists in all of God’s creations, and is renewed and rejuvenated when one believes in the words of Messiah, To walk in love for one another, and in grace and forgiveness. It is at this point in accepting what Yeshua taught that our spirits turn from “withering” to “life”, it is at this point we die to the old, and begin a new life on a new path.
It is for this reason we are called to love and forgive… and it is for this reason that hatred leads to cursing, and cursing leads to death. For to lay a curse on another human being is to lay a curse on the holy spirit that exists inside the human temple. This is a sin that cannot be covered by grace and will be met with on equal measure.
For by judgment we receive judgement by the measure we mete. As God lives within us, and not one word returns to Him null and void… by our own mouths do we receive curses or blessing.
An interesting point to make is the parable of the good Samaritan. This parable in the book of Luke was given by Jesus as a direct response to the question “What must one do to inherit eternal life” aka “Get saved”. If we take a look at this parable, it is the religious who are excluded. The hero of the story is the person who isn’t even of the same faith that Jesus is in, but through his actions of love is the one of merit. No where in here is a mention of religious creed. No where in the story did the samaritan “come to Jesus” in the traditional sense.
The reason I accept Mohammed’s statement above, and believe he is already in the kingdom if not far from it, is because the words he gave are in line with that of Yeshua’s and the Gospel and the Epistles. We really do have to ask ourselves the question: Are we looking with physical eyes? And if so, does our belief make smaller that which Messiah came to do? Are we minimizing the work on the cross? Does our belief in creed, “shut up the gates of heaven” just like the Pharisees of Jesus’ day?
It is with physical eyes that we see these differences and begin to discern what we believe in our own eyes to be good/evil but not as God in his righteousness sees these differences.
John 9:40-41
“Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?” Jesus said, “No, If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains. I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.”
This passage goes on to talk about the Sheppard, and the Robber who comes to kill/steal destroy. We know the sheppard to be Messiah, and the Robber to be the Satan/Adversary.
Genesis 3:4
“You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
We know when the fruit was eaten, it caused a spiritual death, and spiritual blindness… it was the physical eyes that were opened. It was only then, that they realized they were naked. If they recognized their nakedness as evil/bad… why and how were they sinless before? Because with the opening of the physical eyes comes judgement according to the flesh. Spiritual death causes the death of innocence, and the perception of evil which engenders more evil.
It is our physical eyes that many of us today all over the world and in the church (it is not just one group) use to judge, and not our spiritual eyes. Thus we have become spiritually “near-sighted” for we’re not completely blind, there are some very spirit filled people in the church, in temple, in mosque…
Isn’t that the trick that the enemy wants to use against God’s people? Smoke and mirrors to see ourselves as divided? Puff us up with pride so we think that our “group” is special?
This is a serious issue, one that should not be ignored. It is something that we should all pray about for understanding, wisdom that only the holy spirit can bring. In the name of our Lord Jesus, Amen.
From all your comments I can tell they are
very well thought out and scripturally
based. Here is the main issue I have,
I beleive we are made in G-d’s image.
He is three parts (if you agree with the
trininty teaching) Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit.
I believe each human being is made
of three parts (in His image) our
3 parts are: spirit, soul and body.
Not sure how all this looks in the spirit
realm but when Adam was created his
spirit was dominate. That is how he communes
with G-d. He bites the fruit and his spirit
dies. He can no longer relate to G-d who
is a Spirit. So G-d in all of His love and
mercy sent His Son to die so our spirit
could live, again
I believe “born again” part is your
spirit.(don’t know how that works or
what it looks like) This must happen
so man can have a relationship again
with Father God.
I do not believe really good people who
treat people well here will be saved.
I believe it is by faith you declare Jesus
Lord and Savior and you are saved based
on your faith in what Jesus did. No works
of our own.
This may be over simplified and since I
answered from my phone, I am confident
there are misspells and run on sentences.
I’ll try to get back layer and edit.
I completely agree with your statement. We are all patterned in those three parts. From Adam, to Jesus, from the tabernacle to the temple. I also do not believe works can save someone, but rather the work done by God thru Jesus on the cross… the works are simply the fruit through the gift of grace. But, I just simply believe the work on the cross is a lot larger than we’ve been previously thought possible. After all our God is an awesome God, and all things are possible thru Christ.
… remember. Salvation isn’t about getting man into heaven. It’s about getting God out of heaven into man.
